FAQs

What is an independent Patient Advocate?

An independent patient advocate is a professional who works for you—not for hospitals, insurance companies, or healthcare providers. Our role is to help you navigate the healthcare system by offering guidance, support, and resources, so you can make informed decisions about your care. We assist with understanding medical terms, preparing for appointments, managing complex care plans, and communicating effectively with doctors and healthcare teams. While we can accompany you to appointments and help coordinate care, we do NOT provide any medical advice or treatment. Our primary goal is to help you feel heard and supported as you manage your healthcare journey.

What qualifications and training do independent patient advocates have?

Independent patient advocates come from diverse backgrounds, including healthcare, social work, law, business, and patient experience. Many have previous experience in healthcare administration, insurance, or social services, while others have been patients or caregivers themselves. Board Certified Patient Advocates (BCPAs) have passed a comprehensive exam through the Patient Advocate Certification Board (PACB) and are required to continue their education in order to stay current with the latest healthcare trends and practices. This broad range of experience helps us provide well-rounded support to patients and families navigating complex healthcare situations.

Does insurance cover the cost of patient advocacy services?

Currently, most health insurance plans do not cover the cost of independent patient advocacy services. Our services are typically paid for "out of pocket" by the client or their family.

How do I know if I need a patient advocate?

If you're feeling overwhelmed by managing your healthcare or caring for a loved one, a patient advocate can provide much-needed support. Whether it’s coordinating appointments, helping you understand medical information, or simply providing someone to talk to, we’re here to help take the stress out of navigating the healthcare system. If you’re juggling multiple appointments, struggling to communicate with doctors, or need help understanding treatment options, an advocate can help organize these logistics and give you peace of mind knowing that someone is working on your behalf.

Can I hire an advocate for a family member?

Yes, you can hire an advocate on behalf of a loved one. Many families reach out for assistance when a relative is facing serious health challenges. While we always work directly with the patient, we understand that family members often need guidance as well. Whether you need help organizing care, understanding a loved one’s condition, or making informed decisions, we can provide support and resources. Our focus is always on the patient’s needs, and we can also help you better understand the care and treatment your loved one is receiving.

How do you charge for your services?

We offer a free initial 20-minute consultation to briefly discuss your needs and determine if our services are a good fit for you. If you decide to move forward, we charge a flat fee for an in-depth consultation and action plan. After the consultation, our services are billed based on the time and complexity involved in your case. Fees are calculated on an hourly or retainer basis, and payment can be made via credit card, bank transfer, or other electronic methods.

What services are NOT included in patient advocacy services?

As your patient advocate, we do not provide medical care, legal advice, or financial planning. Our role is to help you understand your medical options, communicate effectively with your healthcare providers, and navigate the healthcare system, but we do not replace doctors, lawyers, or financial advisors. We can provide support in organizing care and making informed decisions, but all medical, legal, and financial decisions remain in your hands

How are your services provided?

Our services are flexible and can be provided in-person, by phone, or via video conferencing, depending on your location and preference. In-person services are available for clients located in Dubai. For clients outside of this area, we offer remote support to make it as convenient as possible for you to get the help you need.

Will my privacy be protected?

Yes, protecting your privacy is a top priority. We strictly follow the highest standard of guidelines to safeguard your personal health information. All communication with us, whether written or verbal, is kept confidential. We use secure, encrypted communication methods and adhere to best practices for data security, ensuring your health information remains private and protected.

How does patient advocacy improve health outcomes?

Patient advocacy plays a critical role in improving health outcomes by ensuring that patients receive comprehensive, timely, and patient-centered care. Advocates serve as intermediaries between patients and healthcare providers, helping to navigate complex medical systems and communicate effectively. Here are key ways in which patient advocacy improves health outcomes:

  1. Better Communication and Understanding: Advocates help patients understand their diagnoses, treatment options, and care plans. This leads to more informed decision-making, which has been linked to better adherence to treatment and improved health outcomes.
  2. Timely and Appropriate Care: Advocates work to ensure patients receive the right care at the right time. This can involve coordinating with healthcare providers, addressing delays, and reducing the risk of misdiagnosis or medical errors.
  3. Patient Empowerment: Advocacy empowers patients by giving them a voice in their own healthcare journey. Research shows that when patients feel involved in their care decisions, they are more likely to follow through with treatment and experience improved outcomes.
  4. Emotional Support and Stress Reduction: Chronic illness and complex treatments can be overwhelming. Advocates provide emotional support, helping patients cope with stress and anxiety, which has been shown to have a positive impact on recovery and overall health.

Supporting Survey:

A special report published by the Coalition of Health Care Advocacy Organizations (CHCAO) in 2023, following a detailed survey of 500 individuals (188 patients and caregivers (P/Cs), 262 advocates and 91 healthcare providers) showed that:

•  94% of P/Cs said working with an advocate positively impacted their care and 99% would recommend working with an advocate.

•  60% of P/Cs felt more informed and confident in making health care decisions.

•  98% of providers said working with an advocate had a positive impact.

•  63% of providers said advocates decreased staff burdens, and 70% believed they enhanced patient understanding and set realistic expectations.

In short, patient advocacy enhances health outcomes by fostering better communication, reducing barriers to care, empowering patients, and providing critical support throughout their healthcare journey.

How do I get started with a patient advocate?

To get started, simply reach out for a free 20-minute consultation. During this call, we’ll briefly discuss your situation and determine if we’re the right fit for your needs. If you decide to proceed, we’ll schedule a more in-depth consultation where we’ll gather more details, develop an action plan, and provide a cost estimate for our services.
